Ronald Koenig's Marine Navigator leaves Google Play

Update: VMH arranges for the full AIS version of the app to be distributed directly

The Marine Navigator app, widely used with our chartpacks, is no longer available through the Google Play Store. The developer, Ronald Koenig, has chosen to discontinue publishing on Google Play.

Working together, we have arranged for the full AIS version of Marine Navigator to be distributed directly through VMH.

For existing VMH users of the Play Store app

Google has now remotely disabled Play Store versions of Marine Navigator.

Background

In mid-2020, customers reported that the paid version of Marine Navigator was no longer listed on Google Play. Mr. Koenig advised that Google’s updated policies concerning background location tracking required significant redevelopment work. Soon after, the free “Lite” version was also removed, and Mr. Koenig decided to discontinue all Play Store activities.

The tracking function in Marine Navigator (which only operates when enabled by the user) was originally compliant but became affected by Google’s policy changes.

Moving forward

VMH and London Chartplotters have long used an OEM version of Marine Navigator in turnkey systems, installed directly on devices without Google Play. Building on this, VMH will now distribute Marine Navigator (full AIS version) directly to end users.

The new distribution model will work as follows:

  1. Customers purchase the app through VMH and receive a download with activation code. The app may be installed on two devices. To ensure authenticity, we will publish a verification hash for the app.

  2. Minor updates and fixes within one year of purchase will be free. Reinstallation on the same device is allowed if required. This is not a subscription.

  3. Major new releases with added features will be offered separately, but upgrading is optional.

Our approach

Our chartpacks have been popular since 2013 because they are simple, affordable, and easy to update when needed. We believe in a “buy and keep” model rather than subscriptions, giving users flexibility to update when it suits them.

Marine Navigator will now follow the same approach: a one-time purchase, optional updates, and straightforward licensing. Combined with our chartpacks, this ensures sailors can continue to rely on a lightweight, full-featured navigation app without unnecessary complications.
