While writing an article on learning to develop your “sixth sense” at sea, I mentioned Captain Joshua Slocum and his famous book, Sailing Alone Around the World .
That mention led me to dig out the book and reread it – and I’d completely forgotten what a fantastic adventure it is. For anyone who loves the sea, adventure, or just a great story, it’s a must-read.
First published around 1900, the book tells the story of Captain Slocum’s solo circumnavigation aboard the Spray, a boat he built himself. The tales are told with a light, charming touch, but the achievements themselves are extraordinary.
The Spray was built by Captain Joshua Slocum
From being chased by pirates to meeting all kinds of weather, and from clever encounters with locals to feats of seamanship that required incredible skill and determination, Captain Slocum’s voyage remains one of the great nautical adventures.
While we don’t have the original illustrations, there is a photograph of the Spray, a design that has inspired many modern vessels around the world.
Built today often in steel, the Spray’s design continues to be recognised as safe, seaworthy, and comfortable for long voyages.
For those who enjoy maritime history or have a spirit of adventure, the book is available to download in PDF form.
