Free Android marine chart updates: 2023-2024

This page applies to customers who have purchased and installed our Android Charts within the last 12 months, either by download or supplied on a 2022 USB device.

Note: The name of your currently installed chart set can be seen in the top left corner of the chart list. Open the chart list by tapping the button showing two circular arrows in the Marine Navigator app.


Android Charts 2022–2023 Update

All updates are provided by download only, even if your original charts were supplied on DVD or USB.

This update will:

  • Upgrade a working 2022 chart set to the 2023 edition

  • Update only the chart package originally installed

  • Apply only to the device on which it is currently installed

  • Require no re-registration or re-activation

Price: Free of charge for customers who purchased 2022 charts


New 'clean sweep' installation method

This method avoids any possibility of duplicate charts, which in some cases has caused display or loading issues.

No re-registration is required.


Step 1: Confirm Your Installed Chart Set

  1. Start your Android device and open Marine Navigator.
  2. Ensure your charts are displaying normally.
  3. Tap the chart list button (two circular arrows).
  4. Note the chart set name shown in the top left corner.
  5. Confirm that it matches one of the update options listed below.

Step 2: Download the Correct Update Package

  1. Download the update directly to your target Android device.
  2. Wait until the file is fully downloaded and verify that it is located in your Downloads folder (not in “My Favourites” or another directory).
  3. Ensure Marine Navigator can see the file when you later choose IMPORT, but do not import it yet.

  • Does not update 2021 purchases, even if updated in 2022

Update 3: vmh-ALL-2022

Step 3: Remove the Existing Chart Set

  1. With charts still visible, tap the chart list button.

  2. Tap the blue folder in the top left corner (eg vmh-UK-IRL-2022).

  3. A list of installed chart folders will appear.

  4. For a clean installation, long-press and DELETE the original chart set folder.


Step 4: Import the Update Package

  1. Return to Marine Navigator.

  2. Choose IMPORT and select the downloaded update .zip file.

  3. Once the import is complete:

    • Close Marine Navigator

    • Power off your Android device

    • Restart the device

No chart re-activation is required.


Step 5: Verify Installation

When Marine Navigator restarts:

  • You will see a pink progress bar rising beside the chart list button.

  • Once complete, charts are ready for use.

Note: Charts are no longer stamped with an issue date during processing.


Important information

  • The updated chart set will retain exactly the same name and year as the original.

  • You can confirm the update by file type:

    • 2023 charts use the .tif extension

    • 2022 charts use the .png extension

  • Many small-scale overview charts now include grey hatched areas marked “Omission of Detail”, showing where larger-scale charts provide coverage.
