SS Robin Big Lift

“Dirty British Coaster with its salt caked smoke stack……” SS Robin hardly fits Masefield’s evocative description these days. Dylan films the delicate transfer of this recently restored vessel’s to a barge during its move from Lowestoft to Tilbury Docks. SS Robin was built by the Thames Iron Works in Bow in 1890 and carried cargo around Europe for 80 years; she was retired to London in the seventies and languished there until the Kampfners secured her for the SS Robin trust in 2002. Finally she was towed to Lowestoft in 2008 for a restoration costing £1.9m. The video covers the lift by Ainscough Cranes on to the barge which was to transport her to Tilbury Docks and become her future home. We follow her journey to London where she joins Cutty Sark & HMS Belfast as part of Britain’s illustrious past as a seafaring nation
