The Slug explores up Landmere Creek to Beaumont Quay with its
Canal built by the Romans. We stop to examine the remains of a
limekiln and have its workings explained. The stones lining the
quay come from the old “London Bridge” and the
connection with Guys Hospital is expanded upon. Returning down the
canal we admire the boats at Landmere Quay before sailing round to
Harwich and Felixstowe.
The mix of vessels is wondered at, especially as we yachtsmen with
little or no formal training manage to occupy the same water as the
largest containerships in the world without obvious problems. Dylan
confesses to a desire to “have a go” at driving
one of the tugs and there is a lovely mix of the old and new to be
admired. We then leave all this behind and head up the Stour where
the Haven turns into Heaven in the sunset.
